DSNM Driving Education Program

The quality driving education begins with one of Melbourne's top driving schools. Driver's education typically begins at a very young age. It all starts when you pick up the “Road to Solo Driving” Handbook and learn all there is to know about Road safety rule, traffic regulations and driving a car. However, for everyone involved, a person's legal driving education program begins when they seek to obtain their Victorian driver's licence.

This handbook must be studied as completely as feasible in Victoria. In Victoria, the Traffic Handbook is also known as “The Road to Solo Driving”. This guidebook is the official handbook published by the road traffic authorities, and it was created just for your driving education.

To be able to learn to drive, you must first study the manual and become acquainted with all there is to it. Once you've gained confidence and learnt everything, you'll need to enroll in and take the Learners Permit Test.

To be allowed to take driving lessons with a driving instructor, everyone must pass the Learners Permit Test. It is critical to read this guidebook as part of the entire driver education curriculum.

Learners Permit Test is conducted at any VicRoads Office.

Learner permit:

The learner permit test consists of 32 questions and is part of the driver education program. Each question generally have 3/4 possible answers and you have to choose the correct answer.

Practice learner permit test

The practice learner permit knowledge test has been designed to help you prepare for the learner permit knowledge test.

To pass the learner permit knowledge test, you will need to read the most recent edition of the Road to Solo Driving handbook. Make sure you study all of the handbook, as the questions in the learner permit test are based on all four chapters.

The practice learner permit knowledge test:

  • is similar to the actual Vic Roads test
  • has 32 questions like the actual test
  • questions are randomly generated - different each time you try
  • has a 78% pass mark
  • Wrong answers link you to the chapter where the information is covered in the Road to Solo Driving handbook.

Once you have passed the learner permit test, you will have successfully finished the first part of your driving education program. Your Learner Permit is good for a period of ten years. You can begin taking practical driving lessons as soon as you get your learners permit.

How to get the VicRoads learners test: checklist

  • Get the most recent edition of the Road to Solo Driving handbook. Make sure you study all of the handbook, as the questions in the learner permit test are based on all four chapters.
  • Take the online practice test on this page.
  • Decide on the exam date.
  • If you’re ready to take the test, make an appointment and pay the fees. Your learner permit test fees are broken down into two parts: an appointment booking fee and a test fee.
  • Fill out the licence or learner permit application form without signing it. You’ll need to complete the following sections: “What are you applying for?”, “Your personal and contact details”, “Your health details”, “Your licence/learner permit record”, and “Additional details” (if required). Bring the unsigned form with you to your appointment at VicRoads so you can sign it there.
  • On the test day, bring the following documents with you: 1) your unsigned learner permit application form, 2) one ‘Category A’ evidence of identity document (e.g. Australian birth certificate or passport), 3) one ‘Category B’ evidence of identity document (e.g. Australian bank statement, student ID or Medicare card), and 4) evidence of your current address (if your current address isn’t shown on the Category A or B evidence). If you don’t bring these documents, you won’t be able to take the tests.
  • Take the tests at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. There are two tests you’ll need to take: the knowledge test (10-30 minutes), and the eyesight test (5 minutes). The knowledge test is done on the computer and has 32 questions. You need to get at least 25 questions right to pass (78%. Your pass result will be valid for 12 months.

Because your driver education curriculum focuses on actual driving experience, you will need to get experience on any road and in any traffic scenario.

Try to get as much exposure to different types of traffic and road conditions as possible.

Aim to at-least drive in the following areas and conditions:

  • main roads driving
  • back streets
  • back streets
  • Hi way driving
  • city driving
  • Lane change
  • Parallel reverse Parking
  • three point turn
  • night and day driving
  • off peak and peak time traffic driving
  • driving with trams and Bus
  • hook turns, sharing right turn
  • merging lanes over pass and under pass
  • maneuvering into tight spots
  • doing U turns
  • dealing with unfamiliar stressful traffic arrangements

If you are between the ages of 18 and 21, you must complete 120 hours of supervised driving lessons (including 20 hours night driving experience) as part of your driver education program, which must be documented in a driving log book. VicRoads provides the log book, and each driving lesson must be signed by a Full Victorian Licence holder.
