Test Structure

What to Expect Before & During Your Test

Your VicRoads driving test runs in three clear parts. Knowing exactly what happens at each stage takes most of the anxiety out of test day.

01

Pre-Drive Safety Check Before driving

Before you turn the key, the tester asks you to sit in the driver's seat and identify and operate your indicators, brake lights, horn, hazard lights, headlights (high and low beam), windscreen washer and wipers. You'll also need to identify the handbrake and point to (but not operate) the front and rear demisters. Then start the engine. Your DSNM instructor drills this until it's second-nature so you don't waste a single mark here.

02

Stage One — Quiet Streets 10–15 minutes

Stage one covers starting and stopping the vehicle, left and right turns at intersections, and changing lanes — all on quieter roads. You'll also be asked to complete one low-speed manoeuvre: either a reverse parallel park or a three-point turn. Warning: anything unsafe or illegal in stage one ends your test on the spot.

03

Stage Two — Busier Traffic ~20 minutes

Pass stage one and you progress to stage two, conducted in busier traffic to assess your ability to perform normal driving tasks safely and efficiently. Expect lane changes, merging, driving on straight and curved roads, stop signs, and gap selection. The tester gives simple instructions like "at the next street, turn right" — follow them and demonstrate calm, safe driving. If you don't catch an instruction, just politely ask for it to be repeated.

What's Being Assessed

9 Things the Tester Is Watching For

The licence testing officer scores you on these nine areas throughout the entire drive. Demonstrate them consistently and you pass.

01

Observation

Head-checks, mirror-checks and active scanning of the road ahead.

02

Signal Use

Indicating early enough and turning indicators off after each manoeuvre.

03

Gap Selection

Choosing safe gaps when turning, merging, or changing lanes.

04

Speed Choice

Matching your speed to the limit, the traffic, and the conditions.

05

Parking

Smooth, controlled reverse parallel park or three-point turn.

06

Following Distance

Maintaining a safe gap from the vehicle in front (2-second rule).

07

Lateral Position

Keeping the car centred in your lane on straights and curves.

08

Stop Position

Stopping fully and squarely at stop signs and red lights.

09

Control

Smooth steering, accelerator, brake and clutch — no jerky inputs.

Know the Difference

Critical Errors vs Immediate Termination Errors

Two types of mistakes can hurt you on test day — but only one ends your test instantly. Learn the difference, and your instructor will help you avoid both.

WARNING

Critical Error

Recorded as a warning — but you may still pass

  • Driving too slowly for the conditions
  • Failing to look or signal — but no evasive action needed
  • Blocking a pedestrian crossing — but no pedestrians affected
  • Allowing one wheel to mount the kerb when parking
  • Stalling the car
  • Slow-pausing at a stop sign without fully stopping (with no danger to others)
  • Any other potentially unsafe action that doesn't cause immediate risk
INSTANT FAIL

Immediate Termination

Your test ends instantly — automatic fail

  • Colliding with another vehicle, or failing to give way and someone else has to avoid you
  • Mounting the kerb while driving
  • Exceeding the speed limit by 5 km/h or more at any time
  • Exceeding the speed limit by any amount for 5 seconds or more
  • Exceeding the speed limit by any amount in a school zone
  • Failing to give way, signal or check — and someone has to avoid a collision
  • Stopping in a dangerous position
  • Driving through a stop sign or red traffic light
  • Disobeying the testing officer or police, or needing verbal/physical assistance
  • Anything else that creates an unsafe situation
⚠ Critical Reminder

Turn These Devices Off Before Your Test

If any of these go off or get used during the drive, your test will be terminated immediately. Switch them all off before you turn the engine on. ✓ Mobile phone ✓ Pager ✓ Radio ✓ Audio/video recorders ✓ Speed warning devices ✓ Cruise control ✓ GPS / Navigators
